The Lockdown Series

Santosh’s art studio is an extension of her home in Delhi. She started creating these mixed media works to open a dialogue in the times of social distancing when the nationwide lockdown began in India. She is expressing the growing anxiety across society at an individual and community level.

Lockdown I

“Initially the term ‘lockdown’ hit me really hard, for me it meant something for prisoners! I was experiencing something new as a senior citizen, enclosed in my home. And my neighbours, my family, my friends, all away, all confined in a similar situation... There was a sudden vacuum in all our lives. No comforting chit-chat, no familiar faces, no hugging loved ones, no evening walks, no car drives, no luxuries… only empathy to bond us all.”

“I began to adjust to my new life and started creating this experimental series. I began by playing with straight lines, perhaps subconsciously thinking of rigid prison bars.

Lockdown I

Week 2 & 3

As an artist Santosh is experimental and curious. And thrives on exploring new techniques and mediums. Her studio is her sanctuary and with each passing day she became more aware that her art materials might not be easily replenished. So she began looking at ‘art supplies’ around her, beyond the art studio.

“The initial works were less dense. Reflecting the early days when people were still taking the stay-at-home instructions lightly. The over-all mood was then still ‘casual'. “

“As the nationwide lockdown continued and the government began marking containment zones or red zones, these colours too reflected in some of my works."

Lockdown II

“As the lockdown extended and the seriousness of this global gloom sunk in, I found myself creating works with figures cramped in a limited space. Covered in emotions, mixed with uncertainty and worries about the future.

I also observed how I was still able to enjoy beautiful moments at home. With my plants and in my art studio; some works resonate these happy times in bright and hopeful colours.”

Unlock and the new ‘normal’

With the lockdown being partially lifted in her city of residence, New delhi, Santosh continues to come to terms with her new ‘normal’. As a mother away from her children, as a teacher unable to teach her students... But in the middle of this reality she rejoices in her ability to connect with others through her art.
